The Willowbrook Dental Care Guide To Dental X-Rays

Don’t know a periapical from a bitewing? Today’s Houston cosmetic dental blog takes a look at dental x-rays.

Panoramic
If you have ever stood in a huge camera apparatus and struggled to stay motionless while an automated camera made one slow pass around your head, then you have had a panoramic x-ray taken of your mouth. These pictures help dentists see everything in one image: the complete upper and lower jaw. These are often taken during a patient’s first visit to Willowbrook Dental Care. They are also very helpful for evaluating jaw injuries and seeing emerging teeth in children.

Bitewing
Bitewing x-rays help sedation dentist Dr. Anderson see what’s going on between teeth–something that is impossible with a visual exam. They also help your dentist evaluate the jaw bone.

Periapical
These are similar to bite wings but they can get a clearer picture of the tooth roots and bone. These are important for implant dentistry. They are also often used to help diagnose absences in the root of a tooth.

Full-Mouth Series
This is a combination of periapical and bitewing x-rays that gives a comprehensive picture of all the teeth and surrounding bone structure.

If you are a patient of Willowbrook Dental Care and are worried about the safety of dental x-rays, we invite you to discuss your concerns with our technically advanced and friendly staff. We can explain all the precautions that we take to reduce radiation exposure and answer any questions you may have.

If you are pregnant and need a dental x-ray at Willowbrook Dental Care, it is important to let Dr. J. Scott Anderson know this before x-rays are taken. X-rays are not necessarily dangerous for pregnant women, but they are often postponed until after delivery as a precaution. If you are pregnant but have a severe dental problem, call our office right away. We can be reached at (281) 571-3760.

We hope you have learned a little bit about dental x-rays, one of Dr. J. Scott Anderson’s indispensable tools in providing unsurpassed dental care in Houston. We also offer a wide array of dental procedures including porcelain veneers, invisible braces, teeth whitening and more. Check back often for more information about dentistry at Willowbrook Dental Care.

Have Your Dessert, Houston

Have Your Dessert Houston

Your Houston cosmetic dentist knows that it’s too much to ask that you never indulge in sugary treats, but they will tell you that eating sweets at certain times is better for your teeth than others. For instance, when you eat a full meal, your saliva production increases. This helps to rinse food particles from your mouth as well as neutralize the acids that cause plaque.

This is great news for dessert lovers in the Houston area because it means that sweets consumed after meals have a lower risk to your teeth because your mouth is already in optimum cleansing mode.

Houston dentists agree that sweets after meals are preferable to sweets eaten between meals as snacks.

Also remember that what sweets you eat can be as important as when you eat them. Houston dentists are constantly reminding their dental patients that sticky candies stay on your teeth for a long time, even when your saliva is flowing. And hard candies that you suck for an extended time give bacteria a perfect environment to create enamel-weakening acids.

My name is Dr. J. Scott Anderson, and I am a cosmetic and sedation dentist in Houston. My practice is Willowbrook Dental Care located at 17350 State Highway 249, Ste 200 in Houston.

Oral Conscious Sedation

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

Oral Conscious Sedation Some people experience severe anxiety when undergoing dental treatment. With oral conscious sedation, it is possible to relax during dental procedures instead of being tense and fearful. Oral sedation dentistry, relaxation dentistry, conscious sedation and anxiety-free dentistry are all terms used to describe this type of treatment. In addition to alleviating anxiety, oral conscious sedation can help patients with a variety of conditions.

You may want to consider oral conscious sedation if you have any of the following issues:

  • Strong gag reflex
  • Fear of needles
  • Sensitive teeth
  • Fear and anxiety associated with dental treatment
  • Difficulty getting numb
  • A history of negative dental experiences
  • Trouble controlling body movement due to Parkinson’s disease, Cerebral Palsy or related conditions
  • Need extensive dental treatment requiring lengthy dental visits

If you have avoided dental treatment due to any of these factors, give us a call at (281) 571-3760. We can give you more information about sedation options and help you determine which one is right for you. At Willowbrook Dental Care we do all we can to make your visit as comfortable as possible. We look forward to discussing your oral health and dental goals.
