Have Your Dessert Houston

Your Houston cosmetic dentist knows that it’s too much to ask that you never indulge in sugary treats, but they will tell you that eating sweets at certain times is better for your teeth than others. For instance, when you eat a full meal, your saliva production increases. This helps to rinse food particles from your mouth as well as neutralize the acids that cause plaque.

This is great news for dessert lovers in the Houston area because it means that sweets consumed after meals have a lower risk to your teeth because your mouth is already in optimum cleansing mode.

Houston dentists agree that sweets after meals are preferable to sweets eaten between meals as snacks.

Also remember that what sweets you eat can be as important as when you eat them. Houston dentists are constantly reminding their dental patients that sticky candies stay on your teeth for a long time, even when your saliva is flowing. And hard candies that you suck for an extended time give bacteria a perfect environment to create enamel-weakening acids.

My name is Dr. J. Scott Anderson, and I am a cosmetic and sedation dentist in Houston. My practice is Willowbrook Dental Care located at 17350 State Highway 249, Ste 200 in Houston.

Willowbrook Dental Care Guide To Healthy Tooth Enamel

Willowbrook Dental Care Guide To Healthy Tooth Enamel

Here at Willowbrook Dental Care, we want your teeth to last a lifetime! Tooth enamel is one of the hardest parts of the body, but it is non-renewable so it is important not to not neglect or abuse our teeth. Daily teeth and gum care is the best way to protect tooth enamel.

Even though every Houston drug store carries hard bristle brushes, we recommend brushing with a soft brush after every meal to gently brush away acid. Scrub too hard, and you can erode enamel. It is ideal to brush immediately after eating, but brushing within 60 minutes of a meal has benefits. The quicker you remove food from your teeth, the better it is for your enamel.

Flossing regularly is also important to keep gums healthy. Whether the food is on tooth surfaces, or hidden in between, it is not doing your enamel any good.

Cosmetic dentist Dr. J. Scott Anderson recommends a checkup and thorough cleaning every six months. Our skilled hygienists remove tartar, a substance that attracts plaque to the surface of the teeth and can weaken the teeth’s structures. Regular checkups prevent problems and save you money on expensive restorations down the road.

Remember: don’t use your teeth for opening packages! Keep scissors and bottle openers handy. At Willowbrook Dental Care, we see damaged teeth and dental work as a result of patients using their teeth as tools. Biting down on something too hard, like ice or hard candy can also damage enamel.

Attention Houston athletes: be sure to use a mouthguard for team, contact, and recreational sports.

Teeth grinding is also a common dental threat. Be careful not to grind teeth, this can not only wear away enamel but also pave ways for cavities to get in. If you grind your teeth while you are sleeping, make an appointment to be fitted for a night guard. Your enamel will thank you.

Lastly, remember: drink water. Coffee, sports drinks, soda, wine, and tea all contain a lot of acid or sugar, and in some cases both. Cut back, or at least use a straw. These drinks cause a lot of tooth decay for non-water drinkers in Houston.

We hope you find these Willowbrook Dental Care tips helpful. For more information on dental care, or to schedule an appointment, contact our Houston cosmetic, implant and sedation dentistry office today at (281) 571-3760! If your teeth have been damaged, we offer a variety of cosmetic and restorative dental procedures including dental crowns, implants, clear braces, porcelain veneers and teeth whitening.

Seeking A Relationship In Houston?

Friday, October 28th, 2011

Affordable Houston Cosmetic Dentistry Are you one of the many Houston singles looking for a significant other? Perhaps you recently broke off a dysfunctional partnership and are determined to make a better choice this time around. I’m not talking about a relationship with a girlfriend, boyfriend, or spouse – I’m talking about something equally important – your relationship with your Houston dentist. (…I admit my obvious bias.)

Why did you break up with your last Houston dentist? Did he/she cause you fear, guilt and pain? Perhaps you quit seeing your dentist because it was a love-hate relationship – you hated going and he/she loved making you wait. Was your previous Houston cosmetic dentist insensitive to your concerns? Was he/she a poor communicator? Perhaps you have simply moved into the Houston area and need a new provider.

I am Dr. J. Scott Anderson of Willowbrook Dental Care in Houston. I understand that many patients are nervous (okay – downright terrified) about dental visits. I also realize that no client wants to be given a shameful lecture about their oral health.

Though I have years of experience and extensive training on all the latest cosmetic dental procedures, there are some things that can’t be learned in dental school; how to build trusting relationships with your patients and create a relaxed atmosphere in your dental practice. I understand that Houston dental clients can feel very vulnerable as they lie in the chair with their mouth open. My staff and I maintain a friendly, pleasant environment in our office. We manage our practice carefully to minimize waiting and provide ample time for each valued patient. For those patients who do experience dental anxiety, we offer sedation dentistry to make your visit as stress-free as possible.

Effective communication is a priority. I make sure my Houston dentistry patients understand their restorative and cosmetic options and answer all their questions before we develop a treatment plan. We provide a wide array of services from dental implants to invisible braces to teeth whitening and more!

If you are currently seeking a considerate, experienced, and sensitive Houston dentist, I look forward to meeting you. My phone number is (281) 571-3760. You can learn more about me at http://www.thehoustoncosmeticdentist.com/about.htm.

Healthy Teeth and Your Houston Diet

Thursday, February 24th, 2011

Healthy Teeth and Your Houston Diet Maintaining healthy teeth is an important concern for our local Houston residents. As your cosmetic dentist, it’s my job to help you understand how to care for your teeth and to keep them healthy. Everyone in the Houston knows that maintaining healthy teeth requires regular daily brushing and flossing. Regular visits to your local Houston dental practice is also necessary to keep watch for cavities and to help you maintain proper dental hygiene. We often forget that maintaining a healthy diet can also be beneficial for the health of your teeth.

A Houston diet that includes foods that help your muscles and bones will also help you develop healthy gums and healthy teeth. Examples of local Houston foods to include in your diet include foods rich in vitamin B such as breads and cereals. Foods rich in vitamin C, usually fruits and vegetables, help improve the health of your gums. Zinc and magnesium are also good for the health of your teeth and are found in foods like lean beef, fish, and poultry.

All foods increase the production of saliva. Saliva is important to healthy teeth because it helps to maintain the pH balance in your mouth. Maintaining this balance helps keep your teeth and gums healthy. Foods high in fiber also encourage saliva production as does the chewing of sugar-free gum. Gum, however, can damage unhealthy teeth or pull out dental fillings, so always use caution when deciding whether to chew gum and which brand to chew.

Just as certain diet choices in the Houston area can be beneficial to the health of your teeth, others can be detrimental. Foods and drinks that are high in sugars are more likely to form the acids that attack your teeth and result in decay. And while table sugar is often associated with the formation of cavities, other sugars such as glucose, fructose, and maltose are also causes, and are often found in juices and sodas. Limiting the consumption of sugars to mealtimes lessens the amount of time your healthy teeth are exposed.

Making good diet choices and limiting between meal sugar consumption can improve the health of your teeth and gums.

If you would like to learn how to better care for your healthy teeth in the Houston area, contact Willowbrook Dental Care at (281) 571-3760. We would love to hear from you. We also provide cosmetic dentistry and sedation dentistry services.

What is a Canted Midline?

Thursday, February 10th, 2011

Houston Cosmetic DentistsDr. J. Scott Anderson considers many factors when designing a smile for a Houston smile makeover client. One of the smile design elements involved is the facial midline. The facial midline can be determined by drawing an imaginary line from the center of the eyebrows to the center of the two peaks in the top lip (Cupid’s bow).

The skilled Houston cosmetic dentist considers the length and angle of the facial midline to properly position porcelain crowns, veneers and dental implants. When front teeth restorations do not line up with the facial midline, it is called a canted midline. This is a common mistake found in the cosmetic work of inexperienced Houston cosmetic dentists.

Most Houston dentistry patients do not realize the level of 3-D engineering required in cosmetic dentistry. In addition to the orientation in relation to the facial midline, there is also the angle and size of the teeth in relation to each other and in relation to the size and shape of the lips and gums.

If you are considering an extensive smile makeover, you do not want to trust your smile to an inexperienced Houston cosmetic dentist. When you have a smile design consultation with Dr. J. Scott Anderson feel free to ask probing questions about Dr. Anderson’s experience and technical design procedures. We are confident that you will feel comfortable choosing Dr. Anderson for your smile makeover.

Versatile Dental Veneers for a Vivid Smile

Thursday, January 13th, 2011

Affordable Cosmetic Dentistry in Houston Have you ever wished you could quickly attach perfectly shaped, dazzling white front surfaces to your teeth? Guess what? You can! With porcelain veneers, you can eliminate smile imperfections in just one visit to your Spring, TX cosmetic dental office.

The porcelain veneer is one of the most versatile items in a Spring cosmetic dentist‘s toolbox. Veneers turn unattractive smiles into perfect smiles with minimal disruption to existing tooth structure. They are quicker and usually less expensive than complete dental crowns but are made with the same strong, translucent porcelain.

It’s no that wonder that a very large percentage of people in the public eye have porcelain veneers. A Texas actress can receive a perfect smile in the morning and appear on a talk show that evening. A supermodel can permanently remedy a discolored tooth and pose for photos right after leaving her Cypress dental office. A Houston television news anchorman can have his teeth perfectly aligned in a couple hours and report Texas news that same day.

I am Dr. J. Scott Anderson of Willowbrook Dental Care in Houston, Texas. I use veneers alone and in combination with crowns, inlays, onlays, and tooth implants for dramatic smile makeovers. Perhaps porcelain veneers are the best route to your perfect smile.

Let’s talk. My cosmetic dental office can be reached at (281) 571-3760

Professional Teeth Whitening

Wednesday, November 24th, 2010

Professional Teeth Whitening at Willowbrook Dental Care A brilliant smile leaves a lasting impression. Professional teeth whitening can dramatically improve your overall appearance and give you a boost in self-confidence.

Our teeth often turn yellow or gray as we age. The things we eat and drink continually such as colored sodas, coffee and red wine contribute to the staining. Most of us are aware that smoking is not only bad for your lungs; it is an enemy to beautiful teeth. If you are considering having your teeth whitened, you must first decide which method to use. At Willowbrook Dental Care, we enjoy discussing treatment options with our clients. To schedule a consultation to talk about teeth whitening or any other dental procedure, call (281) 571-3760.

At-home whitening treatments usually consist of trays filled with whitening solution. It takes 7-14 days to achieve 3-6 shades lighter. Brush-on teeth gels and whitening strips take up to 30 days to achieve barely noticeable results. Whitening toothpaste may lighten superficial stains but often provides no change in appearance of teeth.

Professional teeth whitening procedures performed by a dental professional achieve dramatic results that last far longer than other treatments.  One such treatment is Zoom whitening.

All of the whitening methods may cause tooth pain or sensitivity, but this usually goes away in a few days. If you have crowns, porcelain veneers or bonding, it is important to talk to your cosmetic dentist before choosing a whitening method.
